-The afternoon withered like a balloon around Dylan on his stoop, waiting for Robert Woolfolk to return. pg69

- There was a general noise at the edges you’d begun to detect, akin to indecipherable ballpoint desktop gougings. pg70

-Barrett Rude, Jr.,’s bed, which lay on the floor there under the scrolled Dutch ceiling, was a wide flat bag filled, as Mingus Rude demonstrated in passing with a neat two-palmed shove, with actual water, an undulating sea trapped in slick sheets. pg70

21 Jump Street was a TV show in 1987 staring are one and only Johnny Depp. The plot of the show is about specialized police officers who investigate young people in high school or college. These police officers operate undercover to blend in where regular police officers cannot. 21 Jump Street is the headquarters for the squad team. 21 Jump Street had a consistent positive impact on all age groups and touched on all these challenges such as sexual abuse, AIDS, drugs, drunk driving, gangs, homless teens, rape, vandalism, arson, and even dealt with issues on war in other countries.

When I watched my first episode of 21 Jump Street I first noticed the great theme song, great actors, and terrific script. If people of our time today could be excepting to that time period, you know with the 1980 hair styles and clothing, this show could be playing on air right now without a question. I felt again Johnny’s acting sweeping me off my feet, this time a young man, had defiantly became a teen idol from this show. I read a little more into the background of Johnny and this role, and found that Johnny did not want to be apart of this show at all in the beginning. “Depp refused the part and to take it a step further – Depp wouldn’t even look at the script for the pilot. Since the production company had a commitment to film the pilot, a young actor by the name of Jeff Yagher was cast in the role as Tom Hanson and filming of the pilot began. It took only three weeks for producers to realize that Yagher was not working out in the lead role. Knowing that Depp had outright refused the role in the beginning, Cannell and Hasburgh [The producers] once again approached Depp, but this time in a more serious manner, with ethics. The young Johnny Depp, with only A Nightmare on Elm Street, Private Resort, Slowburn, and Platoon under his belt, had to make a decision between a fear of commitment and security. Thankfully for Johnny Depp Fans, Depp chose security and signed the contract.”-Johnnydeppfan.com. I thought about Johnny growing up and how he always got bullied and felt out of place, made me realize why a role such as Tom Hanson would make him question the part. The fact that Tom has to become a bad ass and hang out with bullying characters and become one himself, Johnny never grew up being the tuff guy. This makes me see why he thought this character was a bit intimidating. This show did remind me a bit about that typical show with the gorgeous nothing-is-wrong-with-me hunk, but then again, we are talking about Johnny Depp here. One point I must add is that I do believe Depp looks much better in his 40′s now then as a teen… it must be that mustache he’s missing. I do wonder why after Johnny’s contract he decided to quit 21 Jump Street. Why didn’t he want to go along and make more episodes? I plan to watch all episodes of 21 Jump Street!

Johnny Depp by far is the most honest man in show business. my feelings towards him grow deeper and deeper every time i read more about him. as i was browsing on Metafilter looking at what others see Johnny as, i came across this website about Famous Self-Injurers…Johnny has “cut himself with a knife on different occasions to commemorate various moments or rights of passage in his life.In a Talk magazine interview he said, “It was really just whatever [times when he hurt himself]–good times, bad times, it didn’t matter. There was no ceremony. It wasn’t like ‘Okay, this just happened, I have to go hack a piece of my flesh off.’” In a 1993 Details magazine interview Johnny explained his self-injury, “My body is a journal in a way. It’s like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist.” Now what you may have thought that this is what i got from reading this article, but it most defiantly was not. Johnny using his body as a way of expressing himself only made him more interesting. The real core in this article that stuck to me was about his inner feeling of himself. In a 1999 Avantgarde interview Johnny said, “As a teenager I was so insecure. I was the type of guy that never fitted in because he never dared to choose. I was convinced I had absolutely no talent at all. For nothing. And that thought took away all my ambition too.” Even today he still has feelings of insecurity about himself. In 1999 he said, “My self-image it still isn’t that alright. No matter how famous I am, no matter how many people go to see my movies, I still have the idea that I’m that pale no-hoper that I used to be. A pale no-hoper that happens to be a little lucky now. Tomorrow it’ll be all over, then I’ll have to go back to selling pens again.” the fact that he has this feeling of realization that in a moment everything that he has worked for could be gone in a blink of an eye… he has known this from day one and always reminds himself how easyly his life could be swepped away from under him. this man is living in the moment , he accepts his current situation as it is, yet he’s been to the bottem just like everyone else and he knows how easly it is to slip and fall back to the ground.Johnny Depp is not sucked in this imaginary hollywood world like most arstists are today.

Yes I do realize that Johnny Depp is 28 years older then me, but I find that I have had an obsession with this man. Unfortunately I find that I am not as loyal to him as a wish to be, for I have not seen all his movies. Johnny I’m sorry, when I have the time I promise I will rent all you films and watch them. I was first exposed to this beautiful man when I watched the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The movie came out May 23 2003, my 11th birthday. The movie came out on DVD in December; you could probably guess what my Christmas gift was. The second movie Dead Mans Chest came out 2006 on my 14th birthday, and I also reseved an awesome gift at Christmas. And then the third movie At Worlds End on May 23rd 2007, PLUS THE SOUNDTRACK to go with the movie at Christmas! I could never get tired of these films, ask anyone. When I watched his films ( such as The Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands ) I felt that his acting ability is out most brilliant, he is by far my favorite actor, and has an amazing gift. I thought about his childhood, I believe his family’s moving, meeting new people, and finding new personality traits about him self and being who ever he wants to be every time they hit a new town helped him get this talent. I thought about what I love even more then his excellent acting, is just the person he is in real life! I find that he is real and a big rebel at heart, dropping out of high school and all to be in a rock and roll band.( He did attempt to go back to school two weeks later, but the principal told him to follow his dream of being a musician, Ironic much?.)I find Johnny very humble and sincere as well, when his daughter recovered from an E coli infection at the Great Ormond Street Hospital he thanked the hospital by coming in with his Pirates of the Caribbean costume reading stories to all the ill children for hours. I feel that Johnny is very down to earth and it reminds me of what Depp said, “I never wanted to be the guy people looked at. ” this quote shows he does not care for fame. I find that Johnny never thought that he would get this far in his career and does not take it for granted. I have wondered what it would be like to meet him, not by a crazy fan, or a creepy stacker obsession (did I tell you I have a portrait of him on my wall? framed?) but as two down to earth, real people having a conversation. Unfortunately my dreams are probably 0.01% of that happening, but I could plan on writing down how that conversation may go, how I see it folding out in my eyes. Johnny Depp you’re pretty hot for an old guy

I was browsing the internet to find something that catches my eye and interests me on writing, and i came across, Traci’s lists of ten. This website consists of creative writing activities. These activities are geared to teachers for there students. I must say some of these activities sound like loads of fun.

One fun activity I looked at was called Jumble Story. For this activity you must pick four numbers from one to ten. Each number matches to an item in the list provided below. The first number you chose will be the main character in your story. The second number will become the setting. The third number you chose will become the time, and the forth number will become the situation or the challenge. Write a short story using the character, setting, time period, and situation from the numbers that you chose. Try to keep the character your main and most of the story to stay in the setting. You can include other characters and settings. Keeps the situation or challenge involving the main character or they may observe someone else with the problem. Write the story using all four. You are able to combine these elements in any order you wish to, as long as you use all of them.

Character

1. a new mother

2. a photographer

3. a recent high school graduate

4. a restaurant owner or manager

5. an alien from outer space

6. a homeless child

7. a 93-year-old woman

8. an environmentalist

9. a college student

10. a jazz musician

Setting

1. near a National Forest

2. a wedding reception

3. a celebration party

4. an expensive restaurant

5. a shopping mall

6. a city park

7. the porch of an old farmhouse

8. a polluted stream

9. a college library

10. a concert hall

Time

1. during a forest fire

2. after a fight

3. the night of high school graduation

4. after a big meal

5. sometime in December

6. late at night

7. after a big thunderstorm has passed

8. in early spring

9. first week of the school year

10. during a concert

Situation/Challenge

1. an important decision needs to be made

2. a secret needs to be confessed to someone else

3. someone’s pride has been injured

4. a death has occurred

5. someone has found or lost something

6. someone has accused someone else of doing something wrong

7. reminiscing on how things have changed

8. someone feels like giving up

9. something embarrassing has just happened

10. someone has just reached an important goal

I felt that this activity would really help me on getting idea’s for short stories. I thought about changing the lists to get some really creative stories. i also thought about doing this in class, even for a journal entry. It reminded me of the other activities we did in class to help us revise are writing. i wonder if it may be even more effective if we just chose one number from 1 to 4 and used the element to change i type of writing we have already done. Say if I chose the number 2 setting. Then whatever writing piece I would like to revise, change the whole setting completely and see where my story ends up. I have decided that I am going to write a journal piece using this activity

Katherine Mansfield was born in 1888 in Wellington , New Zealand and passed away in 1923. Her genre consists of literature, fiction and short stories. Mansfield is considered one of the best modernist short story writer’s of her time.

I have compiled that her writing is very descriptive, has many symbols , metaphors, and tons of imagery. I find that Mansfield’s characters are warm-hearted and sensitive. Katherine’s stories consist of every day concerns. Her aim was to make the reader see. i thought about her short story’s The Doll’s house and The Fly. i noticed in both story’s have a vivid description of the settings in the beginning of the story’s , the office in the fly and the doll’s house in The doll’s house. both these luxurious settings are described with imagery.

All the rooms were papered. There were pictures on the walls, painted on the paper, with gold frames complete. Red carpet covered all the floors except the kitchen; red plush chairs in the drawing-room, green in the dining-room; tables, beds with real bedclothes, a cradle, a stove, a dresser with tiny plates and one big jug. But what Kezia liked more than anything, what she liked frightfully, was the lamp. It stood in the middle of the dining-room table, an exquisite little amber lamp with a white globe. It was even filled all ready for lighting, though, of course, you couldn’t light it. But there was something inside that looked like oil, and that moved when you shook it.- The Doll’s House

“New carpet,” and he pointed to the bright red carpet with a pattern of large white rings. “New furniture,” and he nodded towards the massive bookcase and the table with legs like twisted treacle. “Electric heating!” He waved almost exultantly towards the five transparent, pearly sausages glowing so softly in the tilted copper pan.- The Fly

how did Katherine find her descriptive ideas? From her life? Was it a process? Mansfield makes me want to write descriptive short storys. i am interested in her other short stories and planning to read more of them.

when I first heard about Dany Laferrière winning the 2010 Blue Metropolis International Literary Grand Prix( The Blue Metropolis International Literary Grand Prix is awarded annually to a writer of international stature and accomplishment as a celebration of a lifetime of literary achievement).I felt happy that Dany finally won another award since he wrote his children book je suis fou de vava in 1996, which won the Governor General of Canada Award. The story is about a young boy in Haiti ( where Dany Laferrière is from)that has a huge crush on this girl named Vava, and of course Vava is completely unaware. The children’s book reminded me of my childhood friend Cassandra. Cassandra was adopted from Haiti and lived in Toronto with her new Mother and Father. I met her in kindergarten. Now, living downtown Toronto near The Annex 12 years ago, there weren’t too many multicultural children. Reminding Cassandra of friendly faces back home, I became her new best friend. Cassandra used to own this book. I have vague memories of this book being read to us, and squished tightly beside the other French books on her shelf. Wondering now, what made Dany write je suis de vava? I would have never known the author of the children’s story book, or even remember the old memories of the book if I didn’t scroll down the list of the IFOA XXX and saw the familiar title. I am defiantly interested in reading Je suis un écrivain japonais, which came out in 2008 and is finally being translated in English this year. The book is about “a blocked Montreal writer who one day learns that he is famous in Japan for having written a novel he never wrote”. I would also love to give my old friend a shout, who now lives in Vancouver.

Congratulations Dany Laferrière for winning the $10,000 Blue Metropolis International Literary Grand Prix, that is now recognized a lifetime of extraordinary achievement.

When I heard and watched “Birds on the Wires” i felt like i was in a fantasy world only the birds knew about. theres a type of softness about this beautiful piece… and a feeling of it always being there, just like gibberish.. something that has never really been appreciated, music from the birds. but then again you must be creative to look at a picture of birds on a wire and think of it as a scale. i thought about the arangments of the birds, it there was just one other bird, or more wires this piece would be completely different and might have not given me that nursery rhyme feeling. it again reminded me of my other investigations of sound. the fact that the piece already exists but has been put into a new form of art. it made me think about how sound is all around us, you just need to open your eyes and find it. i would like to take a picture of some birds on a wire and see what type of song i can make with it.

When I heard Anna, a piece from The Happiness Project, i found that my reaction was what a great idea it was to trap someone’s emotion by using their melodic phrasing in their voices. it just makes sense. I felt that every interviewer had a different idea of happiness, so their pitches and flow of sound was much different from others. i thought about how everything has a pitch and can be put to rhythm. i never thought about taking something that already exist’s and changing it into another art form completely to make it new. it reminded me of Nobuo Kubota when he transformed one of his sculpture’s Phonic Loaf, cube made out of letters, and sliced them like bread and new letters appeared, then into rubbings, and finally into a vocal score. The Happiness Project made me wonder if interviewers tones would be different if the question was different, or even said differently. i would like to make a song out of my voice from meer conversations.
